El Chopo Marks 50 Years With “Era un Árbol y Se Convirtió en un Bosque” Retrospective Now Open

UNAM leaders cast the milestone as a chance to “tonify the cultural muscle,” reasserting the museum’s social role.

Overview

  • The commemorative exhibition opened as part of the 50th‑anniversary kickoff and runs from 21 August to 7 December 2025 at the Museo Universitario del Chopo in Mexico City.
  • The collective curatorship is led by Sofía Carrillo, Israel García, Carlos Gasca, Sol Henaro and Karol Wolley.
  • The show traces El Chopo’s trajectory through archives, historical documents and new commissions by artists such as Wendy Cabrera Rubio, APRDELESP and Pío Longo, culminating in a public documentation center.
  • The anniversary program includes a Liliana Felipe concert on 20 September, the El solar residency starting 18 November, the inauguration of Marta Palau’s Quetzalcoatlus on 25 November, and a commemorative book planned for March 2026.
  • At the inauguration, director Sol Henaro highlighted the museum’s countercultural legacy and collection, and a new room was dedicated to former director Elena Urrutia.
