Eitorf Senior Defrauded of €50,000 in ‘Grandchild’ Phone Scam

Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman collected the cash during a staged emergency call and left in a beige taxi.

Overview

  • The fraud occurred on 18 September after a call around 14:15 in which a caller posed as the victim’s granddaughter and claimed a serious accident.
  • A second voice pressured the victim for an urgent high five‑figure payment, asserting a health insurer would reimburse the cost.
  • The victim was kept on the phone for hours and told to hand the money to a supposed criminal investigator.
  • Between 17:00 and 19:00 on Hofstraße in Rankenhohn, the victim threw an envelope with €50,000 from her balcony to a woman who then entered a beige taxi driven by a man.
  • The suspect is described as 30–35 years old with chin‑length dark hair, light shoes, and a black dress; police ask for tips at 02241 541-3421.
