Eighth Outer Banks Home Collapses in Buxton as Swells Pound Eroded Shore

Powerful swells from offshore hurricanes undermined an already eroding shoreline, triggering a fast cleanup push.

Overview

  • Eight unoccupied oceanfront houses in Buxton have collapsed in roughly three days, with the latest fall recorded Thursday afternoon, according to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.
  • Five homes failed within 45 minutes on Sept. 30 between 2:00 and 2:45 p.m., a sixth collapsed later that night, and a seventh fell Wednesday night.
  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore closed the beachfront from northern Buxton to ORV ramp 43 and will send about two dozen staff on Friday to begin debris removal.
  • High Surf Advisories and Coastal Flood Warnings remain in effect as NCDOT clears blown sand, fortifies dunes along NC 12, and ferry service between Hatteras and Ocracoke is suspended.
  • Officials warn additional collapses are possible; the five-year total on Hatteras Island has reached 20 homes, with beach nourishment and jetty repairs scheduled for 2026.
