Overview
- The eight United Democratic Party legislators were formally inducted into the BJP in New Delhi on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, increasing the BJP’s strength in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly from two to ten and reducing the UDP to four.
- The group includes Lahkmen Rymbui, Kyrmen Shylla, Balajied Kupar Synrem, Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah, Pius Marwein, Mayralborn Syiem, Ollan Singh Suin and Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah.
- The MLAs said their switch followed sustained talks with senior BJP leaders and was linked to Central assurances on four state demands: progress on coal-mining rules, inclusion of Khasi (and related calls for Garo) in the Eighth Schedule, implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act, and relocation of the Harijan Colony from Them Iew Mawlong.
- Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma noted the shift does not threaten the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance because the NPP retains an absolute majority with 33 MLAs, and he said the BJP has not sought new cabinet berths and the government will continue to function.
- The immediate political consequence is a weaker UDP and a stronger BJP inside the ruling alliance, and the key test ahead is whether the Centre and BJP convert the promised assurances into concrete action before the 2028 polls, with policy moves on coal, language recognition and local resettlement likely to affect livelihoods and identity in the state.
