Overview

• Eight northeastern states backed a Home Affairs ministry proposal to co-host the 39th National Games at a meeting in Shillong.
• Ministers and Olympic association representatives unanimously supported allocating specific sports disciplines across the region to strengthen integrated development.
• Meghalaya, led by Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, secured over ₹1,500 crore for venue upgrades, training centres and athlete accommodations throughout the state.
• IAS Vijay Kumar D, commissioner and secretary of Meghalaya’s Sports & Youth Affairs, outlined investments in sports infrastructure, training centres, hostels and equipment to support more than 10,000 athletes.
• Organizers agreed to reconvene shortly to finalize logistical and operational arrangements ahead of the 2027 Games.
