Eight Metro Vancouver Beaches Under No-Swim Advisories Over High E. Coli

Weekly testing by Vancouver Coastal Health detected E. coli levels at Dundarave Beach exceeding 2,000 MPN, prompting no-swim advisories at eight Metro Vancouver beaches.

Overview

  • As of July 18, six Vancouver and two West Vancouver beaches remain under no-swim advisories for E. coli contamination.
  • Dundarave Beach recorded a single-sample E. coli spike of 2,187 MPN per 100 mL, well above the 400 MPN safety limit.
  • Investigations are underway at seven additional beaches, including Jericho and Ambleside, where recent sample averages approached provincial thresholds.
  • Vancouver Coastal Health conducts weekly monitoring from May through September and issues advisories when single samples exceed 400 CFU/100 mL or the 30-day average surpasses 200 CFU/100 mL.
  • Elevated E. coli levels driven by stormwater runoff, sewage overflows and wildlife pose risks of gastrointestinal, skin, eye and ear infections for swimmers.
