Eight Lima Police Officers Detained in Corruption Probe Over Emergency-Era Extortion

Prosecutors allege the officers exploited emergency powers to demand payments from detainees.

Overview

  • The anti-corruption prosecutor in Lima Norte ordered preliminary detention of eight active officers from Depincri San Martín de Porres on charges of cohecho pasivo propio and aggravated robbery.
  • Raids at seven locations, including the Depincri SMP office and properties in Cercado de Lima, La Victoria, El Agustino, Puente Piedra and San Martín de Porres, led to the seizure of evidence.
  • The detainees include one sublieutenant and seven NCOs identified by authorities, with the inquiry led by prosecutor Edith Cabrera García.
  • According to the fiscal complaint, the case traces to a May 2025 operation at a lodging where cash and goods were allegedly taken and a payment was allegedly demanded from a detainee’s spouse for his release.
  • Prosecutors noted three of the eight had been intervened on January 12 for similar allegations, bringing to 17 the number of police under corruption probe in the first 18 days of 2026, as the interior minister signals a police modernization plan.
