Overview
- Scottish Power, EDF, E.ON, Octopus, Utility Warehouse, Good Energy, Tru Energy and Ecotricity will pay a combined £5.6 million in compensation and write off £13 million of customer debt under Ofgem’s remedy package.
- Eligible households will receive payouts ranging from £40 to £1,000 depending on whether meters were force-fitted or procedures were breached.
- Ofgem halted all forced prepayment installations in 2023 after uncovering more than 150,000 cases of suppliers imposing meters without consent.
- Stricter safeguards now ban involuntary fittings in homes with children under two, residents over 75 without live-in help and other high-risk situations.
- Separate investigations into British Gas, Utilita and Ovo Energy’s prepayment practices are ongoing and could lead to further sanctions.
