Overview

  • An avalanche struck a 10-member international expedition on Broad Peak in late July, and the team’s leader later confirmed there were no survivors.
  • By Aug. 6–7, joint recovery teams had retrieved eight bodies and Pakistan Army helicopters airlifted five of those remains to Skardu’s Combined Military Hospital for processing.
  • Authorities say the remains will be transferred to Islamabad and repatriated after embassy notifications and legal formalities are completed.
  • Two climbers — Pakistani Sohail Sakhi and Mallory Geis — remain unaccounted for and search efforts continue but are limited by hazardous weather, avalanche risk and steep terrain.
  • The Alpine Club of Pakistan led a technically demanding operation with Nepali rescuers and military support, and the death of Nirmal Purja has prompted international tributes and a Nimsdai Foundation fundraiser for the families of killed guides.
