Eight Arrested After Vandalism at Ranchi’s Pandra Police Station, Officer Hurt

The clash followed the death of a crash victim whose case had prompted protests over compensation.

Overview

  • The station was stormed Saturday evening after a road accident patient died at a private hospital in Ranchi, officials said.
  • Protesters had earlier blocked roads and demanded the trailer truck owner be produced and compensation be paid before the stir was briefly lifted on police assurances.
  • A smaller group later returned, argued with officer-in-charge Manish Gupta, struck him on the head, and vandalised the station and a police vehicle, according to the DSP.
  • Additional forces restored order and the injured officer received hospital treatment, while investigators are reviewing CCTV footage to identify further assailants.
  • Police reported arresting eight people, registered a case naming 30 known individuals and 500 unknown persons, and said more arrests are expected.
