Egypt Opens Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza After Decades of Delays

The landmark is positioned to anchor Egypt’s tourism strategy, with full public access from 4 November.

Overview

  • A fireworks-lit ceremony welcomed dozens of foreign delegations, with President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi hosting Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
  • The museum presents more than 100,000 artefacts and, for the first time, the complete 5,300-piece Tutankhamun assemblage.
  • An 11-metre, 83-ton statue of Ramses II anchors the atrium, alongside immersive galleries, precision lighting, virtual displays and a visible conservation lab.
  • The project took over 20 years and roughly $1.2 billion to complete, backed by Japanese loans and technical support.
  • After phased soft openings, the site opens fully to visitors on 4 November, with authorities targeting about five million visitors annually.
