Egypt Installs El‑Dabaa Unit 1 Reactor Vessel, Marking Key Milestone

Under 2017 contracts, Rosatom is building four VVER‑1200 units with fuel supply, operator training plus spent‑fuel storage included.

Overview

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin and Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah al‑Sisi marked the installation in a ceremony, with Putin joining by video link.
  • The Unit 1 reactor pressure vessel was built at Rosatom’s Izhora plant, shipped by sea to Egypt, and moved to the site on October 24.
  • Rosatom chief Alexey Likhachev said construction across all four units is on schedule, with work active on 222 site objects.
  • The completed plant is slated to deliver 4,800 MW from four Generation III+ VVER‑1200 reactors, projected to produce up to 37 billion kWh annually, or about 10% of Egypt’s electricity.
  • Project terms include lifetime nuclear fuel supply, technical support and staff training for the first decade of operation, dedicated spent‑fuel storage, and about 55% localization of contracts in Egypt.
