EFF’s Privacy Badger Lands on Safari for macOS

The extension brings automatic learning-based tracker blocking and Global Privacy Control signaling to Safari users to give them stronger control over data sharing.

Overview

  • The Electronic Frontier Foundation released Privacy Badger for Safari on macOS on October 19, 2026, and users must run Safari 26.5 or later to install the free extension from the App Store.
  • Privacy Badger uses an algorithm that learns which third-party scripts act as trackers and prevents those trackers from loading, offering protection beyond Safari’s default limits.
  • The extension replaces embedded widgets such as tweets, comment boxes, and video players with click-to-activate placeholders so those widgets cannot collect data unless the user allows them.
  • Privacy Badger automatically sends the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal to websites to express a user’s preference not to sell or share personal data, a signal already recognized by several U.S. states.
  • EFF reports more than 4 million total users across browsers, says it will refine the macOS release based on feedback, and may explore Safari support on iOS after resolving any macOS issues.
