Education Ministry Reviews Subba’s Request to Add Tribal Languages to CBSE Classes 11–12

Formal talks with the education ministers are intended to secure a timeline for introducing the languages in the 2025–26 academic session.

Overview

  • The Ministry of Education is now reviewing Subba’s formal request to extend CBSE instruction in Rai, Sherpa, Tamang and Gurung to classes XI and XII as optional second‐language subjects.
  • Subba backed a joint petition from four community organizations representing the Rai, Sherpa, Tamang and Gurung ethnic groups.
  • In meetings with Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar, he stressed the proposal’s role in safeguarding cultural heritage and educational continuity.
  • The renewed appeal follows a December 2024 rejection and underscores that these languages are already offered in CBSE classes IX and X.
  • He has asked for a clear implementation timeline for the 2025–26 academic session and highlighted that no additional resources or exam days would be required under NEP 2020 and Article 29.
