Education Ministry Orders Administrative Inquiry After 17-Year-Old’s Suicide Following Alleged School Harassment

Prosecutors describe multiple criminal probes at a very early, complex stage.

Overview

  • The student, identified in reports as Camélia, died Tuesday after intentionally lying on RER B tracks at Villeparisis–Mitry-Le-Neuf, according to the Meaux prosecutor.
  • The Education Ministry tasked the national inspectorate with reviewing the timeline of events and the institution’s response, after the Créteil academy said Thursday it would not open an administrative review at this stage.
  • Prosecutors opened inquiries into the cause of death and a preliminary probe for school harassment potentially leading to suicide, an offense punishable by up to ten years in prison.
  • The family told police harassment began in December and that the school was alerted; they say she was summoned by the headteacher on the day she died and was told she bore some responsibility.
  • Two additional preliminary investigations were launched into violent threats against school leadership and moral harassment as large gatherings and online pressures targeted the lycée, which also set up psychological support and protections for the principal.
