Centre Reassigns CBSE Leaders as Probe Ordered into On-Screen Marking

The government has launched a one-member inquiry into the board’s procurement and the unstable digital marking system that students say is blocking timely appeals for college admission.

Overview

  • The Centre transferred CBSE chairman Rahul Singh and secretary Himanshu Gupta and named Prashant Lokhande and Varun Bhardwaj as their replacements, a move reported on Tuesday.
  • A one-member inquiry chaired by S. Radha Chauhan has been appointed to examine procurement of the On‑Screen Marking (OSM) system and must report within one month.
  • Students and teachers reported blurred or missing pages, wrong answer books, and mismatched handwriting in scanned scripts uploaded under OSM, prompting mass complaints and calls for redress.
  • CBSE opened a re-evaluation and verification portal with an application window through June 6 but users reported login and UI failures while the board said the site faced a denial-of-service surge of about 1.5 million hits and over 100,000 unauthorised-access attempts.
  • The procurement award to Hyderabad-based Coempt Edu Teck, formerly Globarena, and changes to tender terms flagged by a 17-year-old whistleblower and some MPs have intensified demands for a full independent review and clearer safeguards for students’ admissions and data security.
