Edmonton Man Charged Over Online Threats to Jewish Community Released to Saskatoon Under Strict Conditions

Police cite cross-Canada cooperation to protect faith communities.

Overview

  • Edmonton police charged 31-year-old Amjad Jaradat with uttering threats after investigators linked social-media posts to threats against the Jewish community.
  • Niagara Regional Police alerted Edmonton police on Dec. 17 about the posts, which were traced to Edmonton before a suspect was identified and warrants were issued.
  • Jaradat was arrested and charged on Dec. 19 and has since been released to reside in Saskatoon under court supervision.
  • Conditions include staying at least 100 metres from Jewish places of worship and events, avoiding Israel–Palestine-related vigils or protests, and observing residence restrictions except for approved work or emergencies.
  • He is prohibited from possessing internet-capable devices except for supervisor-approved work use, from posting on social media, and from possessing weapons, as the EPS hate crimes unit seeks sentence aggravation if a hatred motive is proven.
