Edmonton Convenience Store Owner and Employee Charged After Weapons and Stolen Goods Seizure

The Edmonton Police Service has charged two men for harbouring illegal and stolen goods including knives and tobacco at a central Edmonton convenience store.

  • On April 17, the EPS community safety team executed a warrant at a convenience store near 106 Avenue and 97 Street, seizing 50 prohibited knives, 12,485 contraband cigarettes, six cellphones and dozens of stolen clothing items.
  • Investigators discovered hidden compartments built into the store’s shelving, illustrating an organized method for concealing illicit merchandise.
  • Filmon Assefw, 26, and Simon Assefw, 19, face charges including possession of weapons for trafficking, possession of stolen property, fraud and distribution of untaxed tobacco.
  • Sgt. Dana Gehring of the EPS community safety team warned that similar operations have been identified at other central Edmonton convenience stores, affecting nearby businesses and neighbourhoods.
  • The EPS is working with the City of Edmonton and partner agencies to intensify enforcement and curb the sale of contraband tobacco, stolen goods and prohibited weapons at local stores.
