Edinburgh Trams and Lothian Buses Enable Apple Pay Express Mode

Express Mode removes authentication to speed tap-on, tap-off travel.

Overview

  • The capability is live on Edinburgh’s tap-on, tap-off trams and across Lothian bus services after going active in recent weeks.
  • Riders pay by holding an iPhone or Apple Watch to the reader until a checkmark appears, with no need to unlock or authenticate.
  • Setup is done in Apple Wallet’s Express Travel settings, which let users choose and change a default payment card.
  • Lothian says Express Mode continues to work in iPhone Power Reserve on supported models.
  • The move follows August’s Greater Manchester launch and adds Edinburgh to cities like London, New York, Beijing, Tokyo, and Sydney, while trams require tap in and out and Lothian buses accept Visa and Mastercard but not American Express for contactless fares.
