Edinburgh Airport Resumes Operations After Air Traffic Control IT Failure

Backlogs from diversions and tarmac holds are set to disrupt schedules through the day.

Overview

  • All arrivals and departures were suspended around 9:30 a.m. local time after a technical issue hit Air Navigation Solutions, the airport’s air traffic control provider.
  • Flights began to restart at about 10:40 a.m., with ANS saying system capability was reinstated and stressing that safety remained the top priority.
  • Multiple inbound services diverted to other airports, including a Delta flight from New York that landed in Dublin and several flights routed to Glasgow and Manchester; flight-tracking data indicated at least 11 diversions.
  • The airport said the outage was a localised issue and not related to the separate Cloudflare problems affecting websites, and NATS offered support to affected airlines.
  • Passengers were advised to check with airlines as cancellations and rolling delays continued, with some departures having waited on the tarmac for up to two hours.
