• Regina Gray, 47, of Conetoe is charged with assault by strangulation, assault on an individual with a disability, and misdemeanor child abuse.
• According to an arrest warrant, she is accused of grabbing the student's neck and striking him.

• The child is described by the sheriff’s office as autistic and nonverbal.
• Edgecombe County Public Schools says Gray is no longer employed and the district is cooperating with law enforcement, with parents notified by letter.
