Turner Prize-winning artist Sir Grayson Perry and journalist Jon Sopel have publicly criticized EDF Energy for drastically increasing their monthly direct debit payments due to erroneous meter readings.
Perry's monthly bill reportedly jumped from £300 to £39,000, while Sopel's increased from £152 to £18,000.
Both Perry and Sopel expressed their frustration on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, and criticized EDF's customer service.
EDF Energy has denied a wider issue with their billing system and stated that unusual changes to direct debit amounts can sometimes occur due to erroneous meter readings.
The company assured that they have interventions in place to verify large increases in customers' direct debits through a human check, and in most cases, system errors are rectified and prevented without impacting customers.
