Eddie Seve Identified After Mid-Air Formation Collision Near Sydney as ATSB Investigates

Australia's transport safety bureau has begun evidence collection to determine how two RV‑7s made contact on approach at Wedderburn.

Overview

  • Two Van’s RV‑7 kit aircraft in a four‑ship formation reportedly touched on final approach to Napperfield/Wedderburn, sending one into nearby bushland while the other landed safely.
  • Emergency services were called about 12:15 p.m. local time and found the pilot, identified as aerobatic flier Eddie Seve, deceased at the scene.
  • New South Wales Police secured the area, urged the public to avoid the site, and appealed for witnesses and any footage to assist the inquiry.
  • The ATSB said it will map the site, recover wreckage for examination in Canberra, and collect air traffic, flight‑tracking, maintenance and weather records, alongside interviews with pilots and witnesses.
  • The Freedom Formation Display Team confirmed some of its aircraft were involved and said it is supporting authorities and the families of affected team members, while witnesses reported close proximity flying before impact without an official cause established.
