ED Searches Eight Sites in Punjab and Chandigarh in Wahid Sandhar Sugar Mill Money-Laundering Probe

The searches follow a 2023 Vigilance Bureau case alleging breaches of a 1933 lease on muafi land.

Overview

  • ED teams searched the Phagwara mill, a Gold Gym, and residences linked to Shiromani Akali Dal leader Jarnail Singh Wahid, officials said.
  • Investigators allege the company mortgaged 31.3 acres for ₹93.94 crore and sold 6 kanal 4 marlas of government land in 2019 in violation of lease terms.
  • The agency has pegged suspected proceeds of crime at about ₹95 crore, which remain under investigation.
  • The ED action is based on a Punjab Vigilance Bureau FIR that preceded the September 30, 2023 arrests of Wahid, his wife Rupinder Kaur, and son Sandeep Singh.
  • The mill is currently operated by Rana Sugar Mills linked to Congress legislators, while former co-owner NRI Sukhbir Singh Sandhar has not visited India since the VB case, according to reports.
