Ed Markey Wins Third Senate Term in Massachusetts

The decisive result gives Markey a likely final six-year term to pursue progressive priorities such as Medicare for All and parts of the Green New Deal.

Overview

  • Election-night returns, called by the Associated Press Tuesday, showed a lopsided margin with early tallies giving Markey roughly 83 percent and Deaton about 9 percent before the race was projected for Markey.
  • Markey reached the general election after defeating Rep. Seth Moulton by nearly 30 points in the Sept. 1 Democratic primary, overcoming arguments that the state needed younger leadership.
  • Federal Election Commission filings show a wide fundraising gap: Markey raised about $8.7 million and spent more than $9.5 million while Deaton’s campaign raised roughly $1.7 million, including over $1 million of his own money.
  • Republican John Deaton, a personal-injury lawyer and former Marine who ran statewide in 2024 and 2026, ran as an outsider and tried to distance himself from President Trump but struggled to build name recognition in a state with few registered Republicans.
  • Markey, who first joined the Senate in 2013 after decades in the House, said this will likely be his final term and pledged to use it to push progressive policies and provide a check on the Trump administration.
