Economy, Immigration, and Foreign Policy Top Voter Concerns for 2024 Election

Inflation, ongoing global conflicts, and record migrant crossings shape national conversation as Congress debates $110 billion security package.

  • According to a new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, the economy remains the top concern for American voters heading into the 2024 election year, with 76% of respondents citing economic issues.
  • Inflation was the most frequently cited economic concern, with 30% of respondents mentioning it. Unemployment (11%), poverty (16%) and government spending and debt (13%) also earned mentions.
  • Immigration has become a significant concern for voters, with 35% citing it as a top issue, an increase from 27% last year. This concern is particularly pronounced among Republicans, with 55% listing it as a top issue.
  • Foreign policy has also risen in importance, with 38% of respondents listing it as a top concern, nearly double the percentage from the previous year. This increase is likely due to ongoing conflicts such as the war between Russia and Ukraine.
  • Congress is currently debating a $110 billion national security supplemental package requested by President Biden that would aid Ukraine and Israel, and enhance immigration enforcement as migrant crossings have reached record levels on the southern border.
