ECI Tightens Security in Kolkata, Defends SIR Timeline as 'Uncollectable' Forms Hit 13.9 Lakh

The poll body will hear TMC objections on November 28 at its New Delhi headquarters.

Overview

  • The Election Commission directed Kolkata Police to bolster protection for the West Bengal CEO’s office after a November 24 security breach and sought an action taken report within 48 hours.
  • In the Supreme Court, the Commission said political parties were creating a scare over the revision and reported 90% distribution and 70% digitisation of forms in Kerala as it opposed calls to defer the process.
  • Operational data from West Bengal showed 13.92 lakh enumeration forms marked uncollectable due to absentee, duplicate, deceased or permanently shifted voters, up from 10.33 lakh a day earlier.
  • West Bengal CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal asserted the December 4 enumeration deadline remains unchanged and said most people who gheraoed the CEO office were not BLOs.
  • Mamata Banerjee intensified protests and renewed her charge that the SIR is chaotic and coercive and linked to BLO stress and deaths, while BJP leaders accused the TMC of staging unrest and misleading the public.
