ECI Publishes Draft Bihar Voter List Showing 65 Lakh Names Removed

The commission attributes deletions to deaths, migration and duplicate registrations with no objections filed by any political party

Overview

  • The Special Intensive Revision cut Bihar’s draft electoral roll from about 7.9 crore to 7.24 crore voters by removing over 65 lakh names flagged as deceased, migrated or duplicate entries
  • Since the August 1 publication, no political party or their booth-level agents have lodged objections while 1,927 individual claims have been registered
  • The commission dismissed P. Chidambaram’s allegation of 6.5 lakh unlawful additions in Tamil Nadu, clarifying that SIR has not been implemented outside Bihar
  • A notice has been issued to RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav as ECI investigates his use of two EPIC numbers after confirming his valid enrolment under one identity card
  • The Supreme Court’s conditional approval of the SIR remains in effect, with the court warning it will step in if mass exclusions are evidenced
