ECI Details Bihar Roll Claims With 1.97 Lakh Deletion Objections as SC Sets Sept. 1 Hearing

With the claims window closing on September 1, Election Commission data show far more objections to deletions than requests for inclusion.

Overview

  • Since the August 1 draft that cut about 65 lakh names, the ECI has recorded 1,97,764 objections for exclusion and 29,872 claims for inclusion.
  • More than 13,33,000 first-time voters have applied for registration via Form-6, with over 61,000 applications processed so far.
  • Electoral officers have issued roughly 3,00,000 notices to voters flagged for “doubtful citizenship,” concentrated in districts such as Kishanganj, Purnea, Katihar, Supaul, West Champaran and Madhubani.
  • Political parties have submitted only 128 formal claims and objections—mostly from CPI(ML)-Liberation—while the RJD alleges many booth-level submissions were not properly lodged.
  • The Supreme Court will hear on September 1 pleas from the RJD and AIMIM to extend the filing deadline, as the final roll remains slated for publication on September 30.
