Overview
- The Election Commission removed 474 registered unrecognised political parties on September 18 in the second phase of its drive, after delisting 334 on August 9.
- Following the latest action, 2,046 RUPPs remain on the rolls, down from 2,520 reported before the recent phases.
- The 474 removals span 30 states and Union territories, led by Uttar Pradesh (121), Maharashtra (44) and Tamil Nadu (42).
- The Commission has also identified 359 parties across 23 states and UTs for failing to submit audited accounts for 2021–22 to 2023–24 and for not filing election expenditure reports, with show-cause notices and hearings to follow.
- Delisting is carried out under Section 29A registration guidelines, and it strips parties of privileges granted upon registration, including access to a symbol and tax exemptions.
