Overview
- The European Central Bank published ten finalist designs from an EU-wide competition that attracted more than 1,200 applicants and were chosen by an independent jury.
- Finalists fall into two clear visual programmes: one series features historical and cultural figures and the other shows birds and river-themed imagery.
- The ECB has opened a consultative public survey that has drawn more than six million responses so far and will stay open until 21 September.
- The public vote is advisory only and the Governing Council will combine survey results, jury views and technical security assessments to pick a winner around year-end.
- After selection the winning design must pass detailed security and usability development, testing and production planning, so new euro banknotes are not expected to enter circulation for several years.
