ECB Opens Innovation Track to Test AI-Driven Digital Euro Payments
The programme will trial AI agents, micropayments, privacy controls, and merchant integrations to help decide whether a retail digital euro can be ready for possible issuance in 2029 under EU law.
Overview
- The European Central Bank has launched a new innovation programme that invites companies, payment firms, merchants, researchers and public bodies to propose prototypes and use cases for AI-enabled digital-euro payments.
- Selected teams will build and test working prototypes from January through June 2027 that cover electronic receipts, multiparty payments, conditional payments, and new payment app features.
- The innovation track is separate from a controlled 12-month beta pilot set to start in the second half of 2027 with 36 preselected banks and payment providers testing a non‑legal‑tender beta token in real payment settings.
- Participants must design solutions that follow privacy-by-design, user control and data protection principles and must work within existing identity and anti‑money‑laundering checks performed by banks and payment firms.
- Any decision to issue a retail digital euro requires EU legislation and a later ECB Governing Council decision, and the ECB says current planning targets possible readiness for first issuance in 2029 if the legal framework is approved.
