EC Tells Bihar to Accept Aadhaar as Voter ID Proof After Supreme Court Order

The poll panel moved to enforce the court’s directive, limiting Aadhaar to identity proof in Bihar’s voter roll revision.

Overview

  • The Election Commission directed the Bihar Chief Electoral Officer to treat Aadhaar as the 12th acceptable document for identity, not citizenship, and to relay this to all DEOs, EROs and AEROs for strict implementation.
  • The Supreme Court ordered Aadhaar’s inclusion for identity in the Special Intensive Revision, allowed authenticity checks, and sought the EC’s explanation over showcause notices tied to Aadhaar-related refusals.
  • The poll body cited law stating Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship under Section 9 of the Aadhaar Act and noted it is recognised for identity under Section 23(4) of the Representation of the People Act.
  • About 65.6 lakh names were excluded in the August 1 draft rolls, and the EC says roughly 99.5–99.6% of 7.24 crore electors have already submitted eligibility documents.
  • Claims and objections were due September 1, with late filings to be considered before finalisation; online applications are allowed and the final rolls are scheduled for publication on September 30 under continuing court oversight, with the next hearing listed for September 15.
