EC Steps Up EVM Checks: Assam FLCs Underway, Bengal Gets External Oversight

The commission is pairing on‑ground verification with independent supervision to reinforce confidence before the 2026 state votes.

Overview

  • First‑level checking of EVMs and VVPATs is in progress in Dhubri and Silchar from December 11 to 23 under the Assam CEO’s schedule and ECI SOPs.
  • At the Dhubri warehouse in Gauripur, 1,939 ballot units, 2,094 control units and 2,094 VVPATs are undergoing mandatory technical verification.
  • The Additional District Commissioner (Election) is supervising Dhubri’s process with 10 authorised ECIL engineers, with mock polls planned on 5% of cleared machines in the presence of party representatives.
  • Cachar officials report the Silchar checks are being conducted under strict security with election staff and recognised party observers in attendance.
  • The ECI has appointed five nodal officers from outside West Bengal to oversee FLCs there, introduced candidate images on EVMs, and an official said booth numbers in the state are expected to rise by more than 10,000 after enumeration.
