EC Reports 1.4 Lakh Bihar Roll Applications, Just 10 Party Objections, as SIR Enters Final Week

The court-monitored revision remains on schedule with final rolls due September 30.

Overview

  • The Election Commission says 1,40,931 voter applications have been filed so far in Bihar’s Special Intensive Revision, with 14,374 already disposed of and the claims window open until September 1.
  • Only 10 objections have been submitted by political parties—each from CPI(ML) Liberation—with the EC stressing that no name can be deleted without a speaking order after due enquiry.
  • Documents have been received from 98.2% of electors on the draft roll, and individual claims or objections total 1,21,143, amounting to 0.16% of 7.24 crore electors.
  • The August 1 draft roll omitted about 65.6 lakh names as deceased, shifted or untraceable, or duplicates, and EC sources indicate the final tally of missing electors could rise.
  • The Supreme Court has permitted online claims using Aadhaar and directed parties’ booth-level agents to assist voters, even as opposition groups allege their representatives were turned away when lodging objections.
