EC Ramps Up West Bengal Roll Revision With More Centres and Observers

High no-show rates alongside invalid papers are prompting tighter checks for ghost entries.

Overview

  • The commission plans to expand hearing centres from about 3,234 to roughly 4,500 by appointing more AEROs and requisitioning around 2,000 central officers as micro-observers.
  • Total micro-observers are set to rise to about 6,600 with rapid training to accelerate hearings before the February 7 deadline.
  • More than 10% of nearly 32 lakh unmapped voters skipped hearings without seeking new dates, while about 15% of attendees lacked qualifying documents.
  • The EC has identified 94.49 lakh electors with logical discrepancies, with notices already issued to around 2.5 lakh beyond the unmapped cohort.
  • A dedicated portal now allows migrant workers to upload required documents online, as centrally generated notices go to electors flagged for listing the same parent as more than six others.
