EC Orders FIRs Against Bengal Poll Officials, Seeks Police Report on Observer Attack

The commission pairs criminal action with decentralised hearings to safeguard voter access as the roll revision faces sharp political challenge.

Overview

  • District election officers were told to register FIRs against EROs Debottam Dutta Choudhury and Biplab Sarkar, AEROs Tathagata Mandal and Sudipta Das, and data operator Surajit Halder over alleged credential sharing and fictitious inclusions.
  • The EC asked the West Bengal DGP for an action taken report by 6 January on the 29 December heckling and damage to Special Electoral Roll Observer C. Murugan’s vehicle, calling security gaps serious lapses.
  • Security around the process has been tightened with a Y‑category upgrade for state CEO Manoj Agarwal and CAPF cover at the CEO’s Kolkata office.
  • Officials say flagged ‘logical discrepancies’ in the SIR have fallen to about 94.49 lakh after re‑verification from a far higher draft tally published on 16 December.
  • To ease access for remote and vulnerable voters, the EC approved 160 special decentralised hearing centres across 12 districts and continued relaxations, including automatic enrolment for Birhor, Toto and Sabar tribes, as TMC leaders press allegations of wrongful deletions and Mamata Banerjee’s latest letter cites procedural lapses.
