EC Confirms Radhakrishnan as Vice President, Oath Expected Friday

Disputed claims of cross-voting refocus attention on how he will steer the Rajya Sabha.

Overview

  • NDA nominee C. P. Radhakrishnan won 452–300 over the INDIA bloc’s B. Sudershan Reddy, with 767 of 781 MPs voting, 752 valid ballots and 15 invalid, setting the winning threshold at 377.
  • The Election Commission certified the result and officials indicated President Droupadi Murmu is likely to administer the oath on September 12.
  • BJP figures, including Kiren Rijiju and B. L. Santhosh, claimed opposition cross-voting or intentional invalid ballots, while opposition leaders asserted unity; the secret ballot makes individual choices untraceable.
  • Reports noted 13 abstentions, including seven BJD MPs, four from the BRS, one from the Shiromani Akali Dal and one independent.
  • TMC’s Derek O’Brien urged the incoming Rajya Sabha chair to admit opposition notices, curb mass suspensions, ensure more bills go to committees, allow divisions when sought and avoid censoring protests on Sansad TV.
