EC Adds Aadhaar E-Sign to Voter Forms as CID Probes Fake-SIM Deletion Attempts in Karnataka

The move introduces CDAC-run OTP verification on ECINet forms following Rahul Gandhi’s Aland allegations.

Overview

  • The Election Commission activated an e-sign step on ECINet that routes Form 6, 7 and 8 submissions through a CDAC portal for Aadhaar-linked OTP verification before filing.
  • Officials say the change strengthens identity checks that previously allowed submissions using only a phone number tied to an EPIC without verifying the user’s identity.
  • Karnataka CID sources report nearly 100 SIM cards acquired with fake IDs were used to create logins and file voter-deletion applications across Aland’s 254 polling booths.
  • CID correspondence says EC-provided logs lack destination IP and port details and include dynamic IPs, and requests for fuller technical and authentication data remain outstanding.
  • The EC maintains deletions cannot be executed online and notes a 2023 physical check found only 24 valid cases out of 6,018 in Aland, while sources indicate the new e-sign should curb similar misuse and EC sources told News18 the change was initiated earlier this year.
