Eastern Railway Launches Trial Runs of AC EMU on Sealdah-Ranaghat Route

Trial runs of the 12-coach AC EMU rake began on June 18 with services set to start once a second rake completes testing.

Overview

  • The first AC EMU rake, built by Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, arrived at Ranaghat on June 18 for testing on the Sealdah division’s suburban network.
  • Each coach is fully air-conditioned and features GPS-enabled LED display boards, CCTV surveillance, stainless-steel three-seater benches, wide vestibule gangways and automatic double-leaf sliding doors.
  • Once commissioned, the service will operate on the Sealdah–Ranaghat route as the first air-conditioned suburban local train in eastern India.
  • Eastern Railway has rationalised fares with a base rate of Rs.29 for journeys up to 10 km and Rs.37 for distances between 11 km and 15 km, along with monthly passes at Rs.590 and Rs.780.
  • The Sealdah trial marks the latest step in Indian Railways’ push to modernise suburban travel following AC service rollouts on Western, Central and Southern lines.
