Overview

  • Premier Oscar Mabuyane said two additional victims, including a teenage girl found along the Mthatha River, raised the confirmed death toll to 92.
  • Mthatha accounted for 68 of the fatalities and hosted a memorial service at King Sabatha Dalindyebo TVET College to honour those lost.
  • Elias Sithole of the National Disaster Management Centre confirmed the emergency spans four provinces to unlock funding for relief and rehabilitation.
  • Rescuers are repairing roads and other damaged infrastructure to reestablish vital transport links across the Eastern Cape.
  • At least two schoolchildren are still unaccounted for after being swept away in a bus, and authorities have faced criticism over the vulnerability of flood-prone informal settlements and the effectiveness of rescue efforts.
