Overview

  • The Dagenham fire consumed about eight hectares of grass, shrubland and surrounding vegetation behind Clemence Road and was declared under control by 9:45 pm on July 14.
  • Crews deployed included 20 fire engines, roughly 125 firefighters, a specialist off-road wildfire response vehicle and handheld beaters.
  • Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution, told to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke, and have since been allowed to return under caution.
  • Two additional grass fires in Hornchurch and Walthamstow were extinguished within hours, each drawing about 60 firefighters and multiple engines.
  • The brigade is trialing off-road wildfire response vehicles and advising the public to avoid disposable barbecues and properly discard cigarettes as investigations into the Dagenham blaze continue.
