Overview
- Ishikawa’s area was set at 4,190.94 km² based on the July 1 measurement, an increase of 4.74 km² from April, the Geospatial Information Authority announced on Sept. 26.
- The gain moved Ishikawa to 34th nationwide at 0.35 km² larger than Fukui, whose reported area remained unchanged.
- Officials attributed the change primarily to coastal uplift from the Jan. 1, 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake.
- Municipal increases were assessed as Wajima +2.78 km², Suzu +1.72 km², and Shika +0.24 km².
- The figures reflect a June update to the electronic national basic map used in the authority’s quarterly area surveys, a process that has shifted rankings in past years.
