Earth to Temporarily Gain a Second Moon

Asteroid 2024 PT5 will orbit Earth from September 29 to November 25 before continuing its path around the Sun.

  • Asteroid 2024 PT5, approximately 33 feet in diameter, will be captured by Earth's gravity for 57 days.
  • This mini-moon will follow a horseshoe-shaped path and will not complete a full orbit around Earth.
  • 2024 PT5 was discovered on August 7, 2024, by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System in South Africa.
  • The asteroid is too small and faint to be seen with the naked eye or amateur telescopes but can be observed with professional equipment.
  • After departing Earth's orbit, 2024 PT5 will return to a heliocentric path and is expected to come close to Earth again in 2055.
