Early Snowfall Closes Major J&K Highways as Western Disturbance Cools the North

IMD retains alerts, with crews working to reopen lifeline routes before an expected improvement from October 8.

Overview

  • Traffic was suspended on the JammuSrinagar highway after landslides and shooting stones in the Ramban sector, while the SrinagarLeh route, Mughal Road and Sinthan Top were shut due to snow.
  • Fresh snow covered higher reaches including Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Pahalgam, Zojila, Razdan Pass and Peer Ki Gali, as lower valleys reported heavy rain and sharp temperature drops.
  • Temperatures fell to sub-zero in spots, with Gulmarg at −0.4°C and Zojila near −8°C, and Himachal’s Keylong near 0°C, signalling an early winter chill across high altitudes.
  • Weather offices issued orange and yellow alerts for heavy rain, hail or snowfall through October 7 and forecast drier conditions from October 8, while authorities advised against non-essential travel.
  • Uttarakhand halted trekking in Chamoli and J&K kept schools shut and paused Vaishno Devi and Machail Mata pilgrimages, as Himachal reported multi-day snowfall, road closures in Lahaul-Spiti and concern for apple orchards.
