Early Ski Season Takes Hold Across Germany as Resorts Switch On Lifts for the Weekend

Operators credit frost alongside snowmaking for the jump-start, with timing subject to near-term weather.

Overview

  • Winterberg plans to run about ten lifts from Friday, 28 November, after productive snowmaking exceeded initial expectations of two lifts.
  • Allgäu areas add operations for the weekend: Grasgehren opens 28–30 November with a target of daily service from 5 December, the Fellhornbahn starts 29 November, and the Höllwieslift returns on 28 November after modernization.
  • In Saxony, Skiarena Eibenstock is already open and Altenberg aimed to start Wednesday, while Oberwiesenthal keeps its planned 13 December season start.
  • The German Weather Service expects milder conditions and rain for parts of NRW over the first Advent weekend, which could limit broader early openings.
  • Oberhof reports venues ready earlier than planned, with the Eisarena operating since 13 October and stored, solar-produced snow being deployed for January World Cup events, as municipal ice rinks in Wolfratshausen and Bruchhausen‑Vilsen open on Friday.
