Early-Morning Fire Destroys Seven Bournemouth Beach Huts

Police are reviewing CCTV to investigate whether the blaze at seafront huts marked for demolition was started deliberately.

Overview

  • The fire ignited at about 1:20 am on May 27 along Undercliff Drive and was brought under control by 2:50 am using two main jets and four hose reels.
  • BCP Council head of seafront Anthony Rogers confirmed seven huts were lost and two adjacent units plus a small cliff area sustained damage.
  • Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service handed the scene to Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, which has cordoned off the site.
  • Authorities suspect arson and Dorset Police are working with the fire service’s investigations team to determine the cause.
  • Britain’s oldest public beach hut, Beach Hut 2359 built in 1909, was badly damaged but remains standing and is also scheduled for removal.
