Early Monsoon Drives Surge in Mumbai’s Malaria and Gastroenteritis Cases

Mumbai’s civic body expanded construction site inspections with pesticide operations to counter a mid-year disease surge

Overview

  • BMC data show malaria cases rose to 2,857 and gastroenteritis to 4,513 in January–June 2025, up from 2,055 and 4,200 respectively in 2024.
  • Chikungunya infections jumped to 136 from 21 and dengue edged up to 452, while leptospirosis fell to 101 cases and COVID-19 declined to 992.
  • In May and June, the Special Construction Drive inspected 3,033 sites, collected over 50,000 blood samples and detected 30 malaria cases for immediate treatment.
  • Vector control teams identified 6,506 Anopheles and 27,456 Aedes breeding sites among more than 72,000 inspections, removed over 85,000 water-holding items and carried out extensive fogging.
  • Residents have been urged to eliminate standing water, use mosquito nets or repellents and seek prompt medical care for any fever to prevent further spread.
