Overview

  • The monsoon front moved into western regions on June 19 and spread nationwide, marking an onset six days ahead of average in central areas and four days early in the south.
  • The Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts up to 200 mm of rain by Saturday in central provinces, with Seoul expected to receive over 120 mm and hourly rates of 30–50 mm in parts of Gyeonggi and North Jeolla.
  • Thunderstorms accompanied by strong gusts are predicted along the Yellow Sea coast while rainfall will vary significantly, from light showers on the eastern shores to heavy downpours inland.
  • At a counter-disaster meeting, Lee Han-kyung’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety inspected drainage systems and flood barriers across agencies to reinforce preparedness.
  • Authorities have urged schools and residents to stay off roads during peak showers and to steer clear of low-lying areas and wildfire-scarred slopes vulnerable to landslides.
