Early Flu Wave Hits Japan as Tokyo Tops Advisory and Osaka Cases Double

Health authorities press for hygiene, masking, vaccination.

  • Tokyo’s per‑sentinel influenza reports reached 10.37 for Oct 20–26, crossing the advisory threshold seven weeks earlier than last season.
  • Fourteen of Tokyo’s 31 public health centers exceeded 10 cases per sentinel, with the highest rates in Bunkyo, Nakano, Toshima (Ikebukuro) and Arakawa.
  • Children nine and under accounted for 45.8% of Tokyo cases, and since Sept 1 the season has triggered temporary closures at 239 elementary, 128 junior high and 31 high schools.
  • Osaka reported 5.68 influenza patients per sentinel in week 43, doubling from 2.74 the week prior, while RSV activity remained elevated at 1.81 per sentinel.
  • Fukuoka logged 479 influenza cases for Oct 20–26 and 95 cases of erythema infectiosum, which has stayed at warning level for 24 consecutive weeks, as Hokkaido’s Mombetsu area issued its first flu advisory at 19.25 per sentinel.
